History is being written by common efforts….

The history of this project establishment originated in December of 2003, an informal meeting with the participation of two programs leaders and the executors of the project "Gender Information Center". It was that period as there appeared the idea of joint project that would describe the difficult stage of woman's movement developing in the end of XIX - the beginning of XX centuries.

The reconstruction of woman's movement history is one of the most important directions of Women's Network Program of OSI-AF Azerbaijan since 2000. There were realized lots of actions for forming the specialists potential in this sphere within the frameworks of this program. In the initial stage all the strengths directed at the selection and preparation of researchers. Henceforth some of them had been going on with their work in this direction within the frameworks of network initiation "The Women's Reminiscences: Women's Oral Stories of Transitional Period" to which the national program attached too.

The presented collection is a result of two-year pilot project realized by Azerbaijani and Georgian NGO «International Center of Civil Culture» supported by two countries' national programs.

The collection of the visual evidences and oral reminiscences allows not only to recalled the events, become utterly absorbed in the atmosphere that reigned at that time but also to comprehend, understand how and what efforts were demanded for establishing of Caucasus women's rights. Reading and listening to the life stories, we feel that it is impossible not to admire the oriental women's courage, intellect, culture, purposefulness and contribution to those values that we have got today and which, sometimes, we do not know how to manage.

The existing course of history rather superficially describes the most important stage of women's emancipation that fell on the end of XIX - the beginning of XX centuries. Estimating those events it presents us neither visual nor personal evidences that would make us feel all the depth, difficulty and topical interest of this problem for the contemporaries, for every person.

Undoubtedly, the information collected here will serve also as a supporting material for teachers, historians and researchers working in the sphere of woman's and gender problems. They will get an opportunity of using these unique documents as historical references, visual and oral evidences.

The Women's Network Program of Open Society Institute - Assistant Foundation expresses the greatest gratitude to its colleagues from Gender Information Center, Georgian NGO «International Center of Civil Culture», researchers, technical staff, keepers of archives, translators, editors and all the persons who worked for this project. I'm thankful very much to my colleague, companion-in-work and friend Marina Tabukashvili for her manifested interest, readiness and participation in the realization of this project.

I tender thanks to Women's Network Program - New-York for its support, help, inspiration and participation in all our affairs.
